The Renew Democracy Initiative (RDI) is looking for an enthusiastic program associate to join the team. Our mission is to renew and advance the values of liberal democracy in the U.S. and around the world. In order to achieve this mission, we aim to do 3 things:

1.     Unite people under the first-order principles of a liberal democracy.

2.     Make civics education accessible, engaging, and effective.

3.     Promote respectful dialogue and disagreement.

This role will work directly with the Executive Director and will serve as a generalist, conducting research on topics ranging from civics education to liberal democracy promotion and anything in-between. This role will also have significant administrative responsibilities supporting the Executive Director and helping to manage our internship program. Most importantly, because RDI is a start-up, all team members have the opportunity to interact with the Board of Directors, gain wide exposure and make a truly significant impact.

About the role

Research & Programmatic Support (55%):

  • Research and present on a wide variety of topics. Example projects could include creating a competitive landscape in various political fields, researching existing state standards for civics education and making recommendations for where RDI should focus its efforts, writing clear & concise memos on a variety of subjects, etc.

  • Assist the Executive Director & work with external contractors to manage RDI financials

  • Conduct political, legal & factual research through online databases as needed

  • Assist with the creation of an RDI newsletter, fundraising materials, and other output

  • Work with external partners such as teachers, schools, NGO’s, high-profile political figures, & vendors to advance RDI’s mission

  • Offer other suggestions for ways that our organization can drive impact!

Administrative (45%):

  • Support the ED in daily activities including effective calendar management, meeting preparation, and proactively identifying & ensuring timely execution of follow-up action items

  • Coordinate scheduling & agendas for various meetings with potential partners, funders, and other 3rd parties

  • Provide general office & administrative support to the RDI team as needed including management of expenses, developing & maintaining a well-organized shared filing system, etc.

  • Set up & maintain a well-organized Customer Relationship Management system (CRM)

Qualifications of an ideal candidate:

  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to RDI’s mission, work and values

  • Bachelor’s degree; 2+ years of work experience in a fast-paced setting

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when working on sensitive material with high-profile individuals

  • Open-minded and interested in learning from those with whom you may disagree

  • Highly organized and uniquely detail-oriented

  • Efficient, effective, and clear writing style alongside a strong ability to present well in meetings

  • Able to work well independently with minimal oversight in an unpredictable environment

  • Knowledgeable about political affairs and interested in promoting liberal democracy & civics education

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive (particularly Excel & Google sheets)

  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management and relevant online databases a plus
